Today's post is on Maa Ki Dal (also called as Kali Dal). This is a delicious recipe made out of black urad dal. Do you know that black urad dal has a lot of protein content than the other legumes? It is one of the healthiest pulses for vegetarians as it is iron rich and boosts energy in the body.
So coming on to the post, Maa Ki Dal literally translates to " Mother's lentils" in Punjabi. People often confuse this with Dal Makhni whereas it is actually different. Maa Ki dal is just made out of one lentil which is the black urad dal whereas dal makhni is made out of black urad dal and rajma.
Ingredients:

Black Urad dal 1 cup
Onion 1
Tomato 2
Garlic 1 pod
Ginger 1 inch
Green Chilli 1
Mustard Seeds 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds 1 tsp
Coriander Powder 1 tsp
Garam Masala Powder 1 tsp
Cumin Powder 1 tsp
Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida a pinch
Salt to taste
Method:
1. Soak the black urad dal overnight.
2. Pressure cook the dal for 4 whistles.
3. Heat ghee in a pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and allow it to splutter.
4. Add ginger, garlic and green chilli. Saute until the raw smell of the garlic goes away.
5. Next add onions and saute until translucent.
6. Then add tomatoes. Saute until they turn soft.
7. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder, garam masala powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, asafoetida and salt.
8. Mix them well and add the pressure cooked dal.
9. Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
10. Garnish with coriander leaves.
