A south Indian delicacy ! This is one of the main dish in most of the South Indian marriages. It is prepared during festive times too. Very simple to make and at the same time filled with lots of nutrients. Do give a try if you have never tried it.
Prepared this using Chow Chow (Bangalore Brinjal). But you can make it with white pumpkin and brinjal too. And in the recipe, I ground tamarind along with the other ingredients (to grind). This will make sure that the tanginess of the tamarind is spread across the recipe as well as the dish will not be very watery.
Ingredients:
Chow Chow 1
Toor Dal 1/2 cup
Groundnuts 1/4 cup
Chana Dal 3 tsp
Salt to taste
Mustard Seeds
Oil
To grind:
Tamarind lemon sized
Chana Dal 2 tsp
Coriander Seeds 2 tsp
Red Chillies 5
Hing
Coconut 1/2 cup
Method:
1. Peel the skin of Chow Chow. Chop the veggie into slightly big pieces.
2. Pressure Cook tur dal along with groundnuts, Chow Chow and 3 tsp of Chana dal for 4 whistles.
3. Soak tamarind in little amount of hot water for 15 minutes.
4. Dry roast chana dal, coriander seeds, red chilli until golden brown.
5. Once cool, transfer the above into a mixer. Add coconut, soaked tamarind along with water and hing to it. Grind it into a thick paste.
6. Add the ground paste to the cooked tur dal.
7. Add salt to it and boil for 3 to 5 minutes in medium flame.
8. Switch off the flame.
9. Heat oil in a pan. Once hot, add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add it to the above mixture.
