Today's post is about the popular rice dish of Karnataka. "Bisi Bele Bath" means "hot lentil rice dish" in Kannada language. So it is basically a spicy rice dish made with lentils. Sometimes we confuse this with South Indian Sambar Sadam, but actually both are different dishes from different cuisines, even though they appear similar.

Ingredients:

Rice 1 cup

Tur dal 1/2 cup

Vegetables (Carrot, Beans, Potato, Onion, Capsicum)

Tamarind lemon sized

Oil

Mustard Seeds 1 tsp

Fenugreek Seeds 1 tsp

Ghee

Cashewnuts 4 or 5

To roast and grind:

Coriander Seeds 3 tsp

Chana dal 2 tsp

Urad dal 1 tsp

Cumin Seeds 1 tsp

Cardamom 1 pod

Red Chilli 4 or 5

Pepper 1 tsp

Cloves 1 or 2

Sesame Seeds 1 tsp

Asafoetida a pinch

Cinnamon 1 stick

Coconut 1/2 cup

Curry leaves few

Method:

1. Pressure cook rice and tur dal together for 5 whistles. Once done, mash them thoroughly.

2. Pressure cook Carrot, beans and potato for 4 whistles. You can also use peas and tomato.

3. Soak tamarind in hot water for 15 minutes. Extract the tamarind pulp and keep it aside.

4. Heat oil in a pan. Roast the ingredients given under "To roast and grind" and blend it without adding water into a fine powder. Keep it aside.

5. When hot, add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter.

6. Add onions and saute them until they are translucent.

7. Next add the capsicum pieces and saute them for a minute.

8. Next add the boiled vegetables.

9. Add salt, turmeric powder, asafoetida and mix them well.

10. Next add the extracted tamarind pulp to it. Let it boil until the raw smell of the tamarind goes away.

11. Next add this tamarind mixture to the mashed rice and dal mixture.

12. Add the ground masala powder to it. Add water if the rice is too thick.

13. After simmering for 5 minutes, switch off the flame.

14. Garnish with cashews roasted in ghee.
