Black Eyed Peas Fritters (Karamani Vada)

Have you ever tried a healthy fritter or vada made out of Black Eyed Peas (Karamani / Lobia)? If not, do try this out.


Today's post is "Black Eyed Peas Fritters". This is a very popular snack of Andhra Pradesh. It is popularly called as "Alasandalu Vada" or "Karamani Vada" or "Lobia Fritters / Vada". It is usually served with Coconut chutney. This is a healthy vada because it is made out of Black eyed peas, which is packed with proteins and fiber. To make this even more healthy, you can bake this instead of deep frying. I have never tried baking this, but will try it and let you know how it turns out.


This deep fried vada turned out to be very crispy and tasted awesome too. The only problem that I faced was retaining the shape of the vada when dropping it in the oil, but managed it somehow 😅.

Let's get on to the recipe.


Ingredients:


Black Eyed Peas 1 cup

Onion 1

Green Chilli 1

Red Chilli 1

Ginger 1 inch

Garlic 1 pod (You can use 3 to 4 pods if you like garlicky flavour)

Salt to taste

Coriander leaves few

Oil for deep frying


Method:

  1. Soak the black eyed peas for 4 to 6 hours. Then drain the water completely. Grind it into a coarse paste adding green chilli, red chilli, ginger, garlic, few coriander leaves and salt.

  2. Transfer the ground paste to a bowl. To it, add chopped onions and few coriander leaves. Mix well.

  3. Take a small amount of paste and pat it into small circles with a hole in the centre (just the way we do for medu vada)

  4. Heat oil in a pan. When the oil is hot, drop these vadas (from step 3) into the oil gently. Allow it to fry in medium flame. When browned, take it out from the oil. Serve hot with any chutney of your choice.
