Elephant Foot Yam (Senaikizhangu) Masiyal

Today's post is a simple yet yummy masiyal. Masiyal is a South Indian lentil based food. This has been in existence since age-old. This masiyal is made using Elephant Foot yam and methi (fenugreek) leaves.

Let's get on to the post.


Ingredients:


Senaikizhangu (Elephant Foot Yam) 1 cup

Methi leaves 1 bunch

Tur dal 1/2 cup

Tamarind small lemon sized

Green Chilli 1

Turmeric powder a pinch

Salt to taste

Asafoetida a pinch

Sambar Powder 1 tsp

Ginger 1 inch

Sesame Oil

Coriander leaves


For tempering:

Mustard Seeds 1 tsp

Cumin Seeds 1 tsp

Fenugreek Seeds 1/2 tsp

Red Chilli 1


Method:

  1. Soak tamarind in hot water for 15 minutes. Then extract the tamarind pulp and keep it aside.

  2. Pressure cook Senaikizhangu along with tur dal, a green chilli and a pinch of turmeric for 4 whistles.

  3. Once done, switch off the flame and wait for the pressure to release.

  4. Heat oil in a pan. Once hot, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, ginger & red chilli.

  5. Once they splutter, add sambar powder, turmeric powder & asafoetida. Saute for 15 to 30 seconds and then add the tamarind pulp.

  6. Add salt and allow the tamarind pulp to cook until the raw smell goes away.

  7. Next add the pressure cooked yam and toor dal (step 2) to the tamarind gravy.

  8. Simmer for 5 to 7 minutes.

  9. Add the methi leaves and switch off the flame.

  10. Garnish with coriander leaves.

  11. Enjoy with hot rice.
