Jeeraga Rasam

Today's post is "Jeeraga Rasam". Jeeragam means "Cumin Seeds".


Cumin Seeds are very good for health. They:

👉 contain anti-oxidants

👉 have anti-cancer properties

👉 help to control blood sugar

👉 help to lower cholesterol

👉 aid in weight loss


Let's get on to the post.


Ingredients:


Tomato 1

Cooked Tur dal (1/4 cup or as per your taste)

Tamarind - small lemon sized

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

Asafoetida as per taste

Few Curry leaves

Salt to taste


To soak & grind:


Tur dal 2 tsp

Coriander Seeds 2 tsp

Cumin Seeds 1 tsp


To temper:


Mustard Seeds 1 tsp

Cumin Seeds 1/2 tsp


Method:

  1. Soak the tamarind in hot water for 15 minutes. Extract the tamarind pulp and keep it aside.

  2. Soak the ingredients given under "To Soak & grind" for 15 minutes. Then grind it into a smooth paste adding water.

  3. Pressure cook the dal. Once cooked, mash it nicely.

  4. Add the chopped tomatoes, tamarind extract, turmeric powder, asafoetida and salt to a vessel and bring them to a boil.

  5. Boil on a low heat until the smell of tamarind goes away.

  6. Add the ground paste (step 2), mix well.

  7. Add the cooked tur dal (step 3)

  8. Let it simmer for 5 minutes and then switch off the flame.

  9. Heat a tbsp of ghee. To it add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves. Once they splutter, add it to the rasam.

  10. Garnish with coriander and curry leaves.
