Today's post is a Kothamalli Masiyal (dal made with Coriander leaves). "Kothamalli" translates to "Coriander Leaves" and "masiyal" actually means "boiled and smashed".

The three main ingredients of this masiyal are:

👉 Coriander leaves : is an anti-oxidant rich herb that helps to lower blood sugar, promotes heart health.

👉 Tur dal : is a rich source of protein, carbohydrates and fibre.

👉 Moong Dal : is rich in vitamins, heart-friendly and helps to lose weight too.

***Recipe***

Ingredients:

Coriander Leaves 1 small bunch

Tomato 2 small

Tur Dal 1/2 cup

Moong Dal 1/2 cup

Pepper powder 1 tsp

Coriander Seeds Powder 1 tsp

Salt to taste

Mustard Seeds 1 tsp

Cumin Seeds 1 tsp

Ghee a tsp

Method:

  1. Pressure cook tur dal & moong dal for 4 whistles. Once done switch off the flame, mash it thoroughly and keep it aside.

  2. Blend the coriander leaves adding little water into a fine paste and keep it aside.

  3. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds & cumin seeds.

  4. Once they splutter, add chopped green chilli and red chilli.

  5. Next add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder & salt. Saute them well for 3 minutes.

  6. Add pepper powder, coriander seed powder and the mashed dal mixture(tur dal + moong dal). Let them simmer for 3 to 4 minutes in medium flame.

  7. Add the coriander leaves paste, mix it well and allow it to simmer for a minute.

  8. Switch off the flame.

Variations:

  1. Instead of blending the coriander leaves, you can chop them into small size and add it in step 6 (instead of the paste).

  2. You can also add coarsely powdered pepper and coriander seeds instead of powdering them finely.
