Moru Kootan


Today's post is "Moru Kootan", a classic South Indian dish, made using Yogurt and flavored with coconut, green chillies and cumin seeds. It is very popular in Kerala and Tamilnadu. So simple to make and packed with flavours, it is a great meal when had with piping hot steamed rice.

Ingredients


White Pumpkin 1 cup

Grated Coconut 2 tbsp

Green Chilli 4 to 5

Turmeric pinch

Curd 1 cup

Salt to taste


To temper:


Coconut Oil 2 tsp

Mustard seeds 1 tsp

Jeera 1 tsp

Red Chilli 1

Methi seeds ½ tsp

Curry Leaves few


Method

  • Cut pumpkin into slightly big pieces. Cook them until soft in water with a pinch of turmeric and salt.

  • Grind coconut, green chillies and cumin seeds to a fine paste adding little water. Keep it aside.

  • Take Curd in a bowl and whisk it. To it add the ground Coconut paste (step 2) and the boiled pumpkin. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.

  • Mix it gently and heat it in a low flame. Do not allow it to boil.

  • Once you see the bubbles/ froth coming on top of the gravy, switch off the flame.

  • Heat coconut oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, methi seeds, red chilli and curry leaves.

  • Once it splutters, add them to the kuzhambu.

  • Serve it hot with steamed rice.
