Paruppu Podi (Dal Powder)

Paruppu Podi is very traditional to South Indian Cuisine. "Paruppu" translates to "lentils" and "podi" refers to "powder". So this is basically a blend of dry roasted lentils and spices that is full of aroma & goodness. This is usually served with piping hot rice, with a dollop of ghee. This powder comes in handy when you are lazy to cook, yet when you feel like having something spicy and delish to satisfy your hunger craving 😅. Though they are readily available in Indian Super markets, they can be very easily made at home in our very own kitchen.

This powder is a blend of two lentils namely "Tur Dal" & "Chana Dal". Tur dal is a rich source of proteins, carbohydrates, fibre and it is an incredible source of folic acid. "Chana Dal" is an excellent source of vegetarian protein and is very good for the heart, healthy bones and also improves immunity.

In addition to this, this recipe also uses dry ginger (sukku). Dry ginger lowers Cholesterol, improves digestion and most importantly, it helps to treat discomfort in the Stomach caused due to indigestion.

Let's see how to make this podi (powder).

Ingredients:

Tur Dal 1 cup

Chana Dal 1 cup

Black Pepper 1 tsp

Red Chillies 5 to 6

Dry Ginger (Sukku) 1 inch

Salt to taste

Method:

  • Dry roast all the ingredients given above (except salt) and blend them into a fine powder adding required salt.
